Description: This example of Rookwood pottery, made by Virginia Demarest, is an Art Nouveau vase decorated with the Rookwood Standard Glaze with silver inlay. It measures 8.85 by 4.72 inches (22.5 by 12 cm). During its 87-year history, Rookwood pottery of Cincinnati produced five colors of clay bodies and more than 500 glaze lines. Rookwood Pottery was founded by Maria Longworth Nichols in 1880 and financed by her father (the name Rookwood comes from the name of her father's estate). Though the company started out as an amateur pottery club, it soon became one of the most important pottery manufacturing companies in Cincinnati because of its innovative glazing and firing techniques. Rookwood Pottery won many prestigious awards at expositions such as the Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893) and the Pan American Exposition at Buffalo (1901). Rookwood Pottery closed in 1961. Description: Panoramic watercolor rendering of the exterior of a pottery factory. Based on the intertwined "MTC" design seen on the large building at left, it has been identified as the Mosaic Tile Company factory that was located in Zanesville, Ohio. The artist, whose signature is seen on the lower right, is tentatively identified as Andrew Loomis (1892-1959), an American illustrator who grew up in Zanesville. His father, Newell E. Loomis, appears to have been employed by the Mosaic Tile Company, and served as secretary beginning in 1917 and general manager beginning in 1923. The Mosaic Tile Company was incorporated in Zanesville in1894, and variously produced floor tiles of different types, wall and trim tile, artistic tile murals and faience tile. Description: The East Liverpool company of Knowles, Taylor and Knowles produced this Etruscan-style ewer in the 1890s. It measures 9 by 11 inches (14 by 24.5 cm). The ewer is a piece of Lotus Ware, a type of porcelain developed by the company in 1892. It was the first American-produced porcelain that could rival the well-established European companies. Lotus Ware won top awards at the World's Fair held in Chicago in 1893. The popular porcelain was advertised as "the whitest, purest, thinnest and handsomest art china for decorating manufactured." Lotus Ware was manufactured from 1892 to 1896. It was expensive to make, because the fragile china frequently broke in the heat of the kiln. Workers sometimes took pieces of unbroken Lotus Ware home with them, due to its value and beauty. Isaac W. Knowles opened a small pottery in East Liverpool in 1854. In 1870, John Taylor and Homer S. Knowles joined the company. The operation expanded during the next two decades. By the 1880s, Knowles, Taylor and Knowles was producing translucent china. By 1890, the company was the largest manufacturer of white granite plain and decorative ware in the nation. View on Ohio Memory.
